1. OUR COMMITMENT

Route 66 Relay is committed to making our website and our Event as accessible and welcoming as we reasonably can. We want every person who wants to be part of this race to be able to find the information they need, complete a registration, and reach us with a question.

We are a small, independently operated event. We do not have unlimited resources, and we are honest with you below about what we can and cannot control. Where we can make a reasonable accommodation, we want to — and the fastest way to get one is to ask us early.

2. WEBSITE ACCESSIBILITY

2.1 Standard we work toward

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, published by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible to people with visual, auditory, motor, cognitive, and neurological disabilities.

Our current conformance status: partially conformant. Some parts of the site may not yet fully meet Level AA. We are working toward it.

2.2 What we have done

Built the site on Wix, which provides built-in accessibility infrastructure including keyboard navigation support, screen reader compatibility, and semantic page structure
Used descriptive alternative text for meaningful images
Structured pages with proper heading hierarchy so screen readers can navigate them
Worked toward sufficient color contrast between text and background
Supported keyboard-only navigation of interactive elements
Provided descriptive link text rather than "click here"
Designed pages to be responsive across desktop, tablet, and mobile
Made our legal and policy pages available as plain, structured text

2.3 Known limitations

We want to be straightforward rather than make claims we cannot back up. The following may not be fully accessible:

Third-party embedded content — registration forms, payment processors, timing and results platforms, maps, social media feeds, and video players are provided by third parties. We do not control their code and cannot guarantee their accessibility.
Course maps and elevation charts — inherently visual. If you need course information in an alternative format, email us and we will describe the route, legs, distances, and terrain to you directly.
Photographs and video — historical and user-submitted images may lack complete alternative text or captions.
PDF documents — some downloadable documents may not be fully tagged for screen readers. We will provide the contents of any PDF in an accessible format on request.
Older content — pages and posts created earlier may not meet current standards.

2.4 Assistive technology

Our site is intended to be compatible with recent versions of major screen readers and browsers, including NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, and TalkBack with current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. Combinations of older software or unusual configurations may not work as intended.

2.5 Assessment method

Accessibility of this website has been evaluated through internal self-assessment and the accessibility features provided by the Wix platform. It has not been evaluated by an independent third-party auditor, and this statement is not a certification of conformance.

3. EVENT ACCESSIBILITY

3.1 Please read this honestly

We want to be direct with you about what this Event is, so you can make an informed decision.

The Route 66 Relay is a 100-mile overnight relay run on open public roads and shoulders between Tulsa and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in December. The course:

runs largely on rural two-lane highways and county roads, many with narrow, uneven, unpaved, or nonexistent shoulders;
is not closed to traffic and has limited traffic control;
runs through the night, in darkness, for well over half the elapsed race;
crosses terrain that includes gravel, ditches, culverts, cattle guards, rumble strips, broken pavement, and railroad crossings;
passes through remote areas where emergency medical response may be delayed and cellular coverage is not available; and
takes place in December, when temperatures can fall below freezing and ice, sleet, snow, and freezing rain are possible.

Large portions of the course are not wheelchair accessible and cannot be made so. We do not control the public roadways, shoulders, rights-of-way, or private property along the route, and we cannot modify them.

We tell you this not to discourage you, but so you can assess for yourself whether this Event is right for you.

3.2 What we can do

We will make reasonable accommodations wherever we practicably can. Depending on the request, that may include:

Accessible parking at the start, finish, and accessible exchange zones, where the venue permits
Accessible restroom facilities at the start, finish, and major exchange zones, where available
Assistance with check-in, packet pickup, and bib collection
Advance written or verbal description of the course, legs, terrain, and logistics
Materials in large print or an alternative format
Assistance completing registration by phone or email if the online form is a barrier
Advance notice of accessible routes at Event venues
Reasonable dietary accommodations at Event meals, where meals are provided
Accommodation for a service animal at accessible venues, consistent with the ADA and Oklahoma law
Flexibility in leg assignment within a Team, where the Team agrees and safety permits

3.3 What we cannot do

We want to set expectations clearly:

We cannot modify the public roadways, shoulders, rights-of-way, or terrain of the course. These are controlled by the State of Oklahoma, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, counties, municipalities, and private landowners.
We cannot close roads to traffic beyond what our permits allow.
We cannot make every exchange zone accessible. Many are on rural roadsides, gravel shoulders, or private property with no accessible infrastructure.
We cannot guarantee accessible facilities at third-party venues, host hotels, or partner locations that we do not own or operate.
We cannot waive safety requirements, including night-visibility gear, minimum age, cut-off times, or vehicle and driver rules. These exist to keep people alive on an open road at night.
We cannot provide personal care attendants, medical aides, guides, sighted guides, or one-to-one assistance. You are welcome to bring your own; they must comply with the Terms and Conditions and, if they will be on course or in a vehicle, must accept the Terms and Conditions personally.
We cannot accommodate a request that would fundamentally alter the nature of the Event, create an undue burden, or compromise the safety of any person.

3.4 How to request an accommodation

Please include:

1. Your full name, Team name, and registration confirmation number (if registered)

2. A clear description of the accommodation you are requesting

3. The barrier the accommodation would address

4. Any relevant timing, and how we can reach you

Please submit accommodation requests at least sixty (60) days before the Event — by October 12, 2026 — so we have time to arrange them.

Requests received later will still be considered, and we will do our best, but late requests may not be possible to fulfill given permitting, venue, and staffing lead times.

We will acknowledge every request within five (5) business days and respond substantively as quickly as we can. We may need to discuss the request with you to understand what would actually work, and we may ask what functional limitation the accommodation addresses — but we will not ask for medical records or a diagnosis.

Each request is evaluated individually on its own facts. Granting an accommodation in one case does not create an entitlement or precedent in any other case.

4. ACCESSIBILITY FEEDBACK

We welcome feedback on the accessibility of our website and our Event. If you encounter a barrier, we want to hear about it — it is how we find problems we did not know we had.

We aim to acknowledge accessibility feedback within five (5) business days and to respond substantively within fifteen (15) business days. Where a fix requires development work or a third-party vendor, resolution may take longer, and we will keep you informed.

If you need information from our website in an alternative format, tell us what you need and we will provide it to you directly by email or phone at no charge.

5. THIRD-PARTY CONTENT AND SERVICES

5.1 Our website incorporates content and functionality from third parties — including Wix, our payment processors, our registration platform, our timing and results provider, mapping services, and social media platforms.

5.2 We do not control the accessibility of third-party content, platforms, or venues, and we make no representation or warranty regarding it. We select vendors with accessibility in mind where we have a meaningful choice, and we will raise reported issues with them, but we cannot fix their code or their buildings.

5.3 If a third-party platform is a barrier to your registration, contact us and we will help you register directly by email or phone.

6. ONGOING EFFORT

6.1 Accessibility is ongoing work, not a finished state. We review this statement and our accessibility practices at least annually, and after any significant change to the website or the Event.

6.2 As a small independent event, we improve where we can, when we can. Reasonable accommodation is judged in the context of our size and resources, and this statement reflects a good-faith effort rather than a guarantee of conformance.

7. LEGAL

7.1 No warranty. This Accessibility Statement describes our goals, current practices, and known limitations. It is a statement of intent and effort, not a warranty, guarantee, certification, or contractual commitment that the website or the Event is accessible to any particular person or conforms to any particular standard. We expressly disclaim any such warranty.

7.2 Not an admission. Nothing in this statement is an admission of any legal obligation, deficiency, violation, or liability under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, the Oklahoma Anti-Discrimination Act, the California Unruh Civil Rights Act, or any other law.

7.3 Part of the Terms. This statement forms part of, and is incorporated into, our Terms and Conditions, and is subject in all respects to the assumption of risk, release of liability, indemnity, limitation of liability, governing law, binding arbitration, class action waiver, and jury trial waiver provisions of that agreement — including the requirement in Section 3 of the Terms and Conditions that every Participant be at least 18 years of age and be physically and mentally fit to undertake the Event.

7.4 Safety requirements are not waivable. No accommodation will be granted that waives or relaxes any safety requirement, including night-visibility gear, minimum age, driver requirements, vehicle rules, cut-off times, or the authority of officials to remove any person from the course for safety reasons.

7.5 Governing law. This statement is governed by the laws of the State of Oklahoma.

7.6 Changes. We may update this statement at any time by posting a revised version at route66relayrace.com/accessibility-statement.
